Non-HAZMAT Storage
Non-hazardous chemicals can be organized alphabetically on racks or in cabinets, with liquids and oxidizers placed in secondary containment (a chemically suitable tray, typically made of plastic) (dry and liquid).
Liquids and oxidizers (dry and liquid) should always be kept in secondary containment. When incompatible chemicals are kept in the same acid cabinet or flammable materials cabinet, this is extremely crucial.
Chemicals that are kept on a shelf as opposed to in a cabinet require a shelf with a 1′′ high lip to keep the containers from slipping off. If your shelves lack the necessary lip, get in touch with Physical Plant. You should also make sure that any new equipment you buy complies with this criterion.
The storage of chemicals should not be done on laboratory benches or fume hoods; instead, these spaces should be kept tidy and organized. In chemical fume hoods, only usable quantities of chemicals should be retained.
